چکیده

Master of Science in Information and Communication Technologies by Georgios Dimopoulos In this thesis, the YouTube service and the traffic generated from its usage was analyzed. The purpose of this study was to identify the information in the monitored traffic that could be used as metrics or indicators of the progress of individual video sessions. For this purpose, a tool was developed to perform YouTube traffic measurements by means of passive network monitoring. The tool was designed to obtain information regarding the delays introduced in YouTube video sessions, as well as statistical parameters generated during the video playback. Subsequently, the tool was used to perform long duration measurements in the UPC campus network. The analysis of the obtained data set created from the measurements, gave fruit to interesting results concerning how these parameters affect the progress of the video sessions. Moreover, the results of this study will be used to further research the correlation of the studied parameters with users’ quality of experience. Directors: Pere Barlet-Ros, Josep Sanjuas-Cuxart

Analyzing caching benefits for YouTube traffic in edge networks - A measurement-based evaluation

Recent studies observed video download platforms which contribute a large share to the overall traffic mix in today’s operator networks. Traffic related to video downloads has reached a level where operators, network equipment vendors, and standardization organizations such as the IETF start to explore methods in order to reduce the traffic load in the network. Success or failure of these techn...
